Intercooperation is governed by a Foundation Council made up from representatives of 21 institutions and independent personalities. Six elected members of the foundation council constitute the Foundation Committee. The committee is responsible for the strategic guidance and supervision of the management of Intercooperation.

Composition of the Foundation Committee

  • Dr. Elmar Ledergerber, Mayor of Zurich, President (since 1998)
  • Dr. Ruedi Baumgartner, Professor, Co-Head of NADEL, Post-Graduate Studies for Development at the ETH Zurich, Vice-President
  • Serge Chappatte, former Assistant Director General of SDC
  • Philippe Chauvie, Director SEREC, Swiss Association for Regional and Communal Services, Vissoie
  • Melchior Lengsfeld, Secretary General, Helvetas
  • Verena Wenger, Ex-Co-Head of the Int. Dep. of the Swiss Red Cross

The operational activities of Intercooperation are led by an Executive Director and a Management Team.

Composition of the Management Team

  • Dr. Jürgen Blaser, Head Advisory Services and Capacity Development, Deputy Director
  • Philippe Vaneberg, Head Field Operations
  • Dr. Erich Wigger, Head Finance and Services

The headoffice of Intercooperation is located in Berne, the capital of Switzerland. Intercooperation maintains five delegations and two representations in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Projects and mandates in Eastern Europe are operating from a regional unit based in Berne. Intercooperation has project activities with its own staff and infrastructure in altogether 21 countries, four in Africa, six in Latin America, four in Asia and three in Eastern Europe and South Caucasus. To many more countries Intercooperation is linked through mandates and partnerships.

At the HO in Berne, a competence center has been established consisting of the three groups:

•    Environment and Climate Change

•    Governance and Natural Resources

•    Income and Food Security

The competence centre with fifteen specialists provides thematic and methodological advisory and capacity development services.

The Management Council is a consultative body comprising of representatives of the field units and the competence centre IC Berne to discuss biannually strategic issues with the Management Team.

Achieving more together

Helvetas and Intercooperation entered a strategic partnership in 2008. Within the next 12 months, they will become one organisation under the name of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation.
