ICAR National Award won by CALPI
The Action Research (AR) to Improve the Traditional Milk Sector implemented by CALPI, a programme of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by Intercooperation, has won the ICAR National Award for outstanding interdisciplinary Team Research in Agriculture and Allied Sciences for the biennium 2005 – 2006.
The ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) is the largest autonomous national organization in India which conducts and promotes research and training in the field of agriculture and allied sciences. It has a network of some 96 Institutes, Bureaux, National Research Centres and Project Directorates with a strength of about 6,500 Scientists. In addition, about 26,000 Scientists of the Agriculture and Veterinary Universities and Fisheries Colleges in India partner with the ICAR in teaching, research and extension education.
The Action Research (AR) to improve the Traditional Milk Sector (TMS) implemented in the Khammam and the Vijayawada districts of India, is one among the 17 activity lines supported and implemented by CALPI under its seven thrust areas. The TMS is one of the least studied and explored areas in India although an estimated 46 million producer house holds and 111 million consumer house holds are being served by this. The AR was implemented by a group of organizations like Catalyst Management Services (CMS), Bangalore, the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Bangalore, two Non-governmental Organisations SECURE and ACTIVE, both located at Khammam, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi and others. It was guided and steered by a multi-stakeholder Research Reference Group represented by all the above partners and chaired by the Dairy Development Commissioner of the Andhra Pradesh state.
The award was presented by the Hon. Union Minister of Agriculture Mr. Sharad Pawar - who is also the President of the ICAR - and the Hon. Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Kanti Lal Bhuria in the Award Ceremony held on 16th July at New Delhi. The award recognized the significant contributions of the AR in understanding the structure, functioning and the dynamics of the Traditional Dairy Value Chain and identifying and implementing critical interventions for improving it. The AR clearly demonstrated that, given the right recognition and support in the form of Technology, infrastructure , management, organizational processes and capacity building, the Traditional Dairy Value Chain could also operate viably well within the frame work of the food laws of the country and contribute immensely to the vision of a “socially inclusive and regionally balanced” economic growth.
