Community forestry has brought many changes to Nepal, changes to forests and changes to people’s lives. Switzerland has a unique position in the development of community forestry in Nepal.

Switzerland has been engaged in community forestry since the time of preparation of the Forestry Sector Master Plan in 1989, a comprehensive forest policy document for the period of 1990-2010. Whereas Swiss support started with a focus on tree planting and capacity building of forest staff, subsequent phases focused on forming community forest user groups, and capacity building of groups and local non-governmental organisations.

Achieving more together
