One year on after the Pakistan earthquake

Document Actions
The earthquake that hit Pakistan on 8 October 2005 caused greatest devastation in the North West Frontier Province, where Intercooperation is implementing a number of projects (notably FFSP and IPRP). A special grant of CHFr 5,000 was mobilised by Intercooperation towards immediate relief.

This grant was channelled through Pind Hashim Khan Network (PHKN) - a women’s network in Haripur district and a partner of the Farm Forestry Support Project (FFSP). PHKN focused its activities on providing quick relief and assistance to the people of the Union Councils (local administrative units) of Batagram and Balakot. Tents, blankets and food were supplied to 422 households.

Reporting on the situation in October 2006, PHKN notes that the people of Batagram and Balakot are slowly re-building their lives. The rapid relief assistance that the households received was crucial for their survival in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake; later on, they were housed in temporary shelters provided by the Pakistan army or the UNHCR. Most people are still living in such shelters, and gradually re-constructing their homes and their lives.
