FFSP (Farm Forestry Support Project)

Key message: The project has been successful in two aspects; firstly the involvemnet of rural women as entrepruners, and secondly the non-subsidized and market orientation approach.

Description

The Farm Forestry Project is working in the dry rainfed rural areas of NWFP, Pakistan. The main objective of the project is to promote multi-purpose trees within the farming system for maximization of benefits for the poor. The target group is poor farmers and women. The project is contributing towards poverty alleviation through productivity enhancement from the farming system. The prime strategic focus of the project interventions is on the poverty alleviation and increasing productivity for sustainable livelihoods of the target group. The poverty aspect being addressed through careful selection process of entrepreneurs from the target group besides ensuring the involvement of the poor and disadvantaged group. The issues of equity and equality in terms of distribution of benefits of the project interventions are looked into before initiation of any activity. The productivity aspect is covered through the enterprise orientation and market driven approach of the project. It tries to avoid and eliminate the need for inefficient subsidized packages, as farm forestry is a natural resource management activity, which can be considered inherently commercial and market oriented. This would help in creating ownership, tapping the local knowledge and experiences, which in turn would lead towards sustianability.
