NSCFP (Nepal Swiss Community Forestry Project)

Key message: Communities are empowered and supported to manage their local resources in an equitable, sustainable manner, and national forest policy evolves in a pro-poor manner.

Description

Forests are crucial component of farming systems and rural people's livelihoods in the hills of Nepal. In the framework of Nepal’s Community Forestry policy, NSCFP supports the institutional and financial development of Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs). These groups, which comprise households using a particular, defined forest area, are entrusted by the Government of Nepal to manage the forest for both subsistence and commercial purposes, based on an agreed management plan. The project covers three hill districts of Nepal (Dolakha, Ramechhap and Okhaldunga), and works with over 900 CFUGs. In this sixth and last phase, NSCFP aims to capitalise on the accumulated experiences and learning of community forestry and transfer this knowledge more widely. The thrust is two-pronged, on the one hand consolidating support for CFUGs and thus improving the livelihoods of disadvantaged people (particularly women and those suffering discrimination on the basis of caste, class or ethnicity), and on the other hand intensifying efforts to support the evolution of more democratic and inclusive pro-poor policies in the forestry sector.
