NGO Programme Kerala (SDC/IC NGO Programme, Kerala)

Key message: Empowerment of local communities & partners for appropriate use of natural resources for equitable and sustainable development.

Description

The NGO Programme Kerala was initiated in 1989. The programme works with rural communities and CBOs supported through local Partner NGOs, with the objective of improving the livelihoods of resource poor households for the more efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. The overall objective of the Programme in this last Phase (January 2004 - December 2005) is to consolidate the various activities pursued by the NGOs and to document and analyse lessons learned and experience gained. A further objective is to support and facilitate the establishment of a NGO network at State level that will eventually become self sustaining. The guiding principles for the consolidation phase are people orientation, equity and gender, empowerment and sustainability. HID and gender are crosscutting themes, with emphasis on capacity building at the community level. In the current Phase 13 NGO Partners will participate in the Programme. Focal areas for consolidation are the strengthening of peoples organisations, HID of Partner NGOs, development of appropriate technologies and practices in NRM (eg. PTD, Malabari Goat breed improvement) and networking and collaboration with other development actors.
