SAAKTI (Sustainable Access to Agroforestry Knowledge, Technology and Information)
Description
SAAKTI is aimed to improve the access of farmers -particularly the poor ones for whom agroforestry is an important source of income in Bangladesh- to appropriate and up-to-date knowledge on agroforestry production techniques. In order to achieve this objective in a sustainable manner, SAAKTI contributes to the promotion of a national initiative for knowledge management in agroforestry, which involves both knowledge generators (research institutions, universities and innovative farmers) and knowledge users (extension and development agencies, farmers’ organisations). The role of SAAKTI in this process is mainly that of a broker and facilitator. The stakeholders are supposed to define themselves the most relevant system of knowledge management which can ensure that technologies and information concerning agroforestry reach the farmers in an appropriate, sustainable and affordable way. Though working with stakeholders having a national mandate, SAAKTI concentrates its interventions in the NW Bangladesh, by encouraging collaboration between regional development agencies regarding knowledge management in agroforestry. The project provides also, during its first phase, technical backstopping to LEAF, the field based project of SLU Programme, particularly in the establishment of a system of local advisory service provision in agroforestry, and the promotion of participatory technology development.
